How Do I Handle Mutual Friends After a Breakup?

You can keep friendships without making friends choose sides. Clear requests can help keep your breakup from becoming the group's ongoing job.

You do not have to ask mutual friends to choose sides after a breakup. You can tell them what would help you, such as not passing messages between you and your ex, while allowing them to have their own relationships.

Make a clear, limited request

You might say: “I care about our friendship. For now, please do not give me updates about my ex or carry messages between us. I am not asking you to take sides.”

That request gives your friends something specific to do. You can also let them know whether you are comfortable attending the same events, need a little notice, or would prefer separate plans for a while. Your needs may change, so you can revisit the arrangement later.

Avoid turning friends into a source of updates

It can be tempting to ask what your ex said, who they are seeing, or whether they have mentioned you. But receiving updates can keep your attention on your ex and put your friends in the middle. If you notice that pattern, ask them to leave out the details you do not need.

You can stay close to a friend without discussing the breakup every time you meet. Plan activities and conversations that belong to your friendship, not only to the relationship that ended.

When you are in the same room

Decide in advance how much contact you want. A brief hello, a conversation with other people, or leaving early are all reasonable options. You do not need to perform happiness or hostility. Basic civility is enough if it feels safe.

If the breakup involved threats, harassment, or abuse, ordinary social etiquette may not be the priority. Tell trusted people what support you need, and seek local specialist help if you are concerned about safety.
