Healing & Moving On

Should I Delete Photos of My Ex After a Breakup?

You do not have to choose between keeping every photo visible and deleting everything forever. Start with the boundary that helps you today.

You do not have to delete photos of your ex to prove that the relationship is over. If seeing them is making daily life harder, move them out of view or delete them. If you are unsure, archiving gives you space without forcing a permanent decision today.

Choose based on how the photos affect you

Some people want a clean break from reminders. Others prefer to keep a record of a meaningful part of their life. Either response can make sense. A study of post-breakup digital behavior found that people handle photos and other digital possessions in different ways, but it does not establish one correct choice for everyone.[1]

Try asking: “What happens to me after I see these?” If you feel pulled into checking, comparing, or contacting your ex, hiding the images may be a helpful boundary. If you can keep them without reopening the relationship in your mind, you may not need to change anything.

Consider a temporary archive

You could move the photos into a folder that does not appear in daily memories, turn off automatic photo highlights if your device offers that option, or back them up before removing them from your phone. Be careful not to delete anything you need for a practical, legal, or safety reason.

If you choose to delete them, you can do it because that is what you want, not because a rule says you must. You also do not need to make the decision during a difficult evening. Wait until you feel calm enough to choose.

Make the choice yours

Do not keep or delete photos as a signal to your ex. They may never see the decision, and their reaction is not a useful measure of your recovery. The point is to choose what you want in your own space.
