The Urge to Text

Should I Text My Ex on Their Birthday?

A birthday can make reaching out feel like a special exception. Decide based on your boundaries and what you actually want from the message.

If you are in no contact, or your ex asked you not to contact them, do not text just because it is their birthday. If there is no boundary against contact, there still is not one universally right answer. Ask what you hope the message will do and whether you can accept no reply.

A birthday does not change the boundary

Special dates can make a message feel harmless or urgent. But the date does not cancel a request for space, a block, or a clear decision to stop communicating. If your ex has asked you not to contact them, respect that request.

If you share practical responsibilities, keep any necessary message focused on that responsibility. A birthday greeting is optional, not something you owe them.

Be honest about what you want

Before sending anything, finish this sentence: “I hope they will…” If the honest answer is “reply warmly,” “miss me,” or “start talking again,” a short birthday text may carry more weight for you than it appears to carry on the screen.

That does not make your hope wrong. It does mean you should not describe the message to yourself as purely casual if you are waiting for it to reopen the relationship. A polite reply, a delayed reply, or silence cannot reliably tell you what your ex feels.

If you decide to send a message

Only consider it if contact is welcome, there is no request for space, and you can send a simple greeting without using it to start a larger conversation. Do not add a relationship question, an apology they did not ask for, or a long explanation. If they do not respond, leave it there.

If you are unsure, write the message somewhere private and wait until the birthday has passed. You can still choose later whether contact makes sense. You cannot make someone respond by choosing the perfect wording.
